burning loose threads

There are a lot of things in life that are bothersome. When someone doesn’t use their blinker, accidentally seeing a spoiler for your favorite show on social media. Some of these are worse than others but one thing that most of us deal with is loose threads.

Loose threads in clothing are a simple yet annoying feat. Sometimes I’ll pull a thread and it pops right off, and other times, I’ll pull a thread and it ruins the whole piece of clothing. Loose threads are confusing because you don’t know the impact they might have when you first see them.

Recently, I’ve been having emotions that closely resemble loose threads. Sometimes they start as a small, negative thought and are easily forgotten. Other times, they start as a normal thought and turn into a whole afternoon of negative thoughts. What causes these thoughts? I really wish I knew.

When I get these thoughts, I usually pray and ask God to take them away from me, and temporarily it works but they always seem to come back. Just like a loose thread, you can’t just pull it off and expect it to never come back.

I don’t know who introduced me to using fire to prevent loose threads, but at some point, someone taught me that burning the thread will prevent it from unraveling any further. After looking this up, I found out when you burn a thread, it creates a small knot preventing it from coming loose again. There are certain fabrics where this is harder to do but, when done correctly, you can stop the thread from unraveling.

This morning, in prayer for my loose thread thoughts, I realized that I hadn’t been dealing with my theses ‘threads’ in the best way. I’ve been praying to God, asking him to take them away when I should’ve been praying for a way to combat these thoughts… for a way to burn them.

I have put together a list of verses — I called them ‘verses for combat‘ — that I have chosen to use when my thoughts take over. It’s hard to fight something you don’t feel are always yours, but I’m praying that with the help of the LORD and his words, the thoughts are burnt, tied, and more quickly prevented.

THE LORD (YHWH) is the one who will go before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or abandon you. Do not be afraid or discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8
Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable — is there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praise worthy — dwell on these things. Phillipians 4:8
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world. John 16:33
Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lovely and humble in heart, and you will rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
For you are all children of light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or darkness. So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled. 1 Thessalonians 5:5-6
…everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. 1 John 5:4
All scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 1 Timothy 3:16-17

I hope this analogy makes as much sense in your head as it does mine. I am also praying that you are able to fight these thoughts and feelings as well as you possibly can.

Since originally writing this post I have seen the LORD help me with these thoughts. Speaking God’s truth into an emotional situation helps. It reminds me that where light is, darkness can’t win.

The LORD is with us and is FOR us. I love you all!! Until next time,

sincerely, jamie lynn
