we all have a purpose

During the semester I went through the process of a couple of hiring processes for a potential internship. A lot has changed and I ultimately ended deciding on staying with my current job and taking summer classes. For one of the interview processes, I was asked to write a piece about our purpose of God’s people. I was low-key proud of it and through I should share! So I hope you all enjoy (:

Growing up my brother and I saw the world as a series of opportunities. Beds loved to be jumped on, Playdoh was fun to eat, pillows were sleds to be launched around the house and the list goes on. Often my mom would find us misusing the objects and remind us that things should be used for their intended purpose, and per usual, time would prove her correct. Jumping on the bed resulted in falling off the bed, Playdoh was not good for the digestive system and pillows used as transportation resulted in slamming into furniture. When something is used outside its purpose it could lead to hurt. Beds, Playdoh and pillows have an easy purpose to figure out, but looking at life it’s different. How is a person supposed to figure out their entire aim in life?

Coming into college I didn’t think much, if at all, about my purpose in life. The only thing I cared about was living the ‘ideal’ college life I had seen in movies. In my mind, I created this perfect picture of my life and decided that my purpose in life was to make it happen. It took a week for me to realize that my purpose for being in college did not line up with God’s. I had based my purpose on the unstable foundation of the world (Matthew 7:26-27.) In other words, I had based my purpose on the world and not the steadfast and true purpose that God gives each and every one of us.

Trying to figure out God’s purpose for your life can seem like a daunting task and hearing from God usually takes time. The first step is to realize that God specifically designed every person for a purpose! He knows what each person’s gifts, talents, and even weaknesses are. In Psalm 139:13-14 we are told that God “knit us together” and that we are wondrously made.”

God put time and effort into making us, so realizing our purpose will take time and effort too.

Our life and all of its seasons will not look the same (see Ecclesiastes 3) but the mission God gave each and every one of us has never changed: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:19-20.) God makes it very clear that He created us to spread His love to all people, but this will not look the same in every person’s life.

God made us with different talents and gifts so the way we serve our purpose will look different. Our seasons will impact the way we serve the Lord whether that is equipping ourselves with God’s knowledge, sharing the Gospel overseas, being a resource for others…the list could go on.

If you prayerfully and willingly submit to the Lord He will use you for His purpose.

After I let God influence my decisions I saw big changes in my life. My heart was softened, my passion for the church grew and my fear of the future shrunk. I realized that my purpose and life were safe in God’s hands! I know it is way easier said than done but that’s why we can rest in the Lord. He hasn’t put us in a survivor-style race where it’s winner-takes-all, He has given us a community that will “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24.)

God has given His children a purpose but each of us will fulfill it differently. It may take time to figure it out and it may look different depending on your season but the Lord will equip us. As you try to figure out what your purpose looks like find a community that will encourage you and don’t forget to meet with the Lord.

I hope you all were able to take something away from this and enjoyed!! Until the next post,
